Welcome to the Workin' My Way Community
This
newsletter, and the related web-site and blog, are intended to be
inspiring and educational for anyone who is considering turning a
dream or a talent into a stream of income. Not everyone is cut
out for total self-employment, but many people long to be able
to design a lifestyle, and work that supports it, their own
way. My role is to help them do that.
Each
issue will include News and Announcements of opportunities
and events; a section for Book and Resource Reviews; and
another entitled Notes and Tips from My Journal where I will
share clever ideas I've come upon recently, unique cool stories of
entrepreneurial folks, and my personal take on anything I want to
talk about. (Hey, it's my
newsletter.) :)
Feedback is welcome to jane@lifeandworkbydesign.com

Book Review
The Tipping Point
by Malcolm Gladwell
Little Brown &
Co 2002
$14.95
It has taken me a while to get around to this
best-seller, but I have read it almost non-stop for the last week or
so. The sub-title is "How Little Things Can Make a Big
Difference." Gladwell's premise is that there is a specific
process that has to happen in order for anything - an idea, a
product or a philosophy to suddenly "tip" and take off
successfully. Using such examples as the revival of Hush Puppy
shoes, Paul Revere's ride, and the rise and fall of
urban violence, he demonstrates the effectiveness and
necessity of "Connectors", "Mavens" and "Salesmen" in the course of
social epidemics.
This book is instructive in two
ways. For all of us, it helps us understand how we are
persuaded, often unknowingly, to purchase a product or follow a
certain path of life. For entrepreneurial folks,
it provides some insight into the kinds of methods that are
required to create the "buzz" that will lead to success. If
you read this when it first came out, go back to a new edition and
read Gladwell's afterward - with a couple of years' worth of input
and review, he has honed the message of "word of mouth" and
it's growing importance in today's world of information
overload.

Notes and Tips from my journal
I've
always loved June - not only does my birthday roll around each year
in June, but a new season begins and I love new beginnings!
I've realized that I could never live in a place that did not have
four distinct seasons - they play such an important role in the
rhythm of my life each year. My particular birthdate makes me
a Gemini and that is just so much fun! The
star sign of "The Twins" means that I am very curious and love to
learn; am capable of extreme multi-tasking; and am always
looking for new things to do. But a birthday and a
new season always make me slow down for a day or
so to re-set where I am and where I am going. I
revisit my New Year's goals and try to add some new ones. If
you haven't made a list of goals, make that your challenge for this
month. What do you want to accomplish before your next
birthday?
People
with goals succeed because they know where they are going... It's
as simple as that. ~ Earl
Nightingale
A friend sent me a group of photos
of these wonderful sand "castles" that were created in British
Columbia and I couldn't resist commenting on them. As kids,
many of us built sand castles and learned quickly that the mix of
sand and water had to be just right. But we knew the tide
would wipe out our creation before long and sometimes, that was
actually the fun of it all.
Looking at these
works of art however reminded me of building your own small business
endeavor or maybe your next work of art. You have to have
a plan in mind first; you have to assemble the right tools; and
you have to work slowly and patiently one step at a time. With
proper attention and dedication, the final result is well-built
and beautiful. But unlike the rest of us, these sand artists
start out knowing that the final result will only be temporary - now
that takes a special kind of love for the craft and dedication to
offer the world something at which to marvel. Please go
to the site and look at the rest of these wonderful creations.
I guarantee they will inspire you!

I've Joined the World of Bloggers!
Couldn't resist -
I love to write and I love to spout off, so a blog is just the
ticket! Actually, it is a whole lot easier to work
with and update than a web-site. I'll try to add to it 3 times a
week and there are categories of articles on discovering what your
dreams are, different lifestyle design ideas, unique work
combination ideas and then some revelations about my own journey to
independence. Please visit. An
e-mail alert sign-up and comments section will be added soon.
